Empathy must be cultivated

E MPATHY does not develop in a person naturally; rather, it needs to be cultivated, as per Steven Pinker in his book "The Better Angels of Our Nature". Empathy must not be confused with sympathy. One can be sympathetic to people in challenging situations like physically challenged people who beg for money or elderly homeless people or those living in slums, etc. Empathy is an altogether different emotion or act. One of my friends in Cuttack distributes chocolates and storybooks to children living in a slum near his place, feeding stray dogs daily with biscuits bought from a local paan shop, as exemplified by the Principal of Biju Patnaik Institute of Information Technology and Management, (BIITM), Bhubaneswar , Dr. Mihir Ranjan Nayak or another friend of mine who has taken a stray dog as a pet instead of a specific expensive breed in Bangalore. These can be considered acts of empathy. There are numerous examples I have come across. There is a Bhubaneswar-based NGO th...

Quit Tobacco use permanently

Lot of people think stopping smoking or chewing flavored tobacco is simply a matter of Will Power. This thinking may have worked for a few but for how long. For the vast majority of smokers or pan or gutka chewers this thinking has not worked. This has led to oft repeated humorous quips like I have stopped this habit a lot of time in the past!

But remedy for this situation is handy. I have been able to stop this nasty addiction (that is what it is really, addiction. Its not simply a bad habit if despite numerous attempts one is not able to cease or stop it permanently.

I have developed a simple 3 steps process to quit this nasty addiction permanently. I have quit smoking and chewing flavored tobacco like pan and pan masala since the 10th of May 2019. Today I don't have any craving or urge to try out this stuff in one avatar or another.

I call it the 3 step process...

STEP-1

WHY

It’s as simple as looks. Why do you want to stop this habit?

Every person has a different reason for kicking this habit.

  • It can be fear of getting oral cancer (the probability is high. 3 of my friends who used pan and one guy who used a combination of khaini and gutka are battling oral cancer, 2 others got heart disease due to smoking as smoking narrows the arteries)
  • It can be job-related. (These habits nowadays are looked down upon in the corporate sector)
  • Could be due to family pressure as continuing this habit/s makes a mockery of one’s personality.

I have listed the typical reasons above but if your reason is not listed above don’t worry, this insidious habit needs to end irrespective of the reason!

If you want to know the next 2 steps, I would appreciate if you email me at ckameshv@gmail.com

The reason is simple.

If you indeed are fighting a losing battle then you must make the effort to reach out.

Every email will get customized replies as per their condition.

My advice is totally free and does not cost you anything now or ever!
